Global Tourism and Plastics Initiative

The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative brings together the tourism sector around a common vision to address the root causes of plastic pollution, and enables businesses, governments, and other tourism stakeholders to lead by example in shifting towards a circular economy for plastics.

More than 100 organizations have become signatories of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative and have announced their ambitious commitments to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics, adopt reuse models, and use reusable, recyclable, or compostable plastic packaging and items.

The signatories of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative commit to taking action to achieve the following by 2025:

  • Eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging and items.
  • Take measures to shift from single-use models to reuse or reusable alternatives.
  • (Commit the value chain to) ensuring that 100% of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
  • Take measures to increase the volume of recycled content in all recycled plastic packaging and items.
  • Collaborate and invest to increase the rates of plastic recycling and composting.
  • Inform the public annually about the progress made in achieving these goals.

Destinations (national and local administrations), businesses (accommodation providers, tour operators, suppliers, etc.), and supporting organizations (NGOs, business associations, academic circles, etc.) can become signatories of the Initiative.
