The UN Climate Change report indicates that while countries are reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, it is still not enough to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. According to the report, the combined climate promises of 193 Parties under the Paris Agreement could place the world on a path to approximately 2.5 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century. It also shows that current commitments will increase emissions by 10.6% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels, although this is an improvement compared to last year’s assessment. While emissions are projected to no longer increase after 2030, they still do not show the rapid decline trend that science deems necessary in this decade. The report highlights that CO2 emissions need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels to meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Although the report shows a projected decline in emissions by 2030, countries must strengthen their climate action plans to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate goals.
